Polygon is proposing a network hard fork on January 17th to address excessive gas spikes and handle chain reorganizations (reorgs) to reduce finalization times. Among them, in terms of reducing Gas peak, Polygon proposes to change BaseFeeChangeDenominator from the current value of 8 to 16. This will help smooth out the base fee increase/decrease rate when gas exceeds or falls below the target gas limit in a block. Polygon expects the base gas fee rate of change to drop from the current 12.5% (100/8) to 6.25% (100/16). To solve the chain reorganization, Polygon proposes to reduce the Sprint length (the number of blocks that a validator produces consecutive blocks on the Bor chain) from 64 blocks to 16 blocks, which means that a single block producer will continuously produce blocks of The time (~32 seconds) is much shorter than the current (~128 seconds).
