Large enterprise customers are renegotiating annual contracts with AI model providers, but some are resisting higher spending commitments. According to Sina Finance, an executive at a large financial institution said the company wanted flexibility to switch models as capabilities change rapidly, and to shift workloads to lower-cost options such as OpenAI’s Terra and Luna and Anthropic’s Haiku. The executive said this could sharply reduce AI bills, though total spending may still rise as usage grows; Replit, the article noted, switched its main underlying model from Anthropic to OpenAI in a matter of hours.
Anthropic reported a third-quarter net revenue retention rate of 900% and strong model-inference margins in the first half. The article said Anthropic and OpenAI continue to grow, while raising the question of whether model services could become commodities. It also noted that companies are turning to model-routing platforms such as OpenRouter and seeking to keep Anthropic as an alternative, while Anthropic’s prospectus says it wants more enterprise customers to sign non-cancelable, multi-year contracts with minimum spending commitments. Anthropic and OpenAI have each committed hundreds of billions of dollars to computing over the next decade. The issue is expected to be discussed at Anthropic’s first quarterly earnings call early next year.
