Ethlabs researcher Derek Chiang said Base and Ethereum’s account abstraction collaboration around EIP-8130 and EIP-8141, known as Frames, broke down last week, with both sides now expected to advance separate AA standards. According to ChainCatcher, Chiang said the split reflects growing divergence between L1 and L2 priorities, with L1 focused on censorship resistance, openness, privacy, and security, while L2 emphasizes scalability, customization, and compliance.
Chiang said the two sides still agree on core use cases such as gasless transactions and passkey wallets, but differ sharply on compliance requirements. He added that a lack of unified standards may not be negative, as each side can pursue innovation according to its own vision.
He outlined two possible paths: building a coordination mechanism with broader stakeholder governance for shared resources such as the EVM, or accepting that standard fragmentation is unavoidable and focusing on wallets and applications that can hide those differences. Chiang said he is more optimistic about the second approach.
