Revolut, Europe’s highest-valued fintech startup, recently suffered a customer data leak and is facing a blackmail threat from hackers. According to Sina Finance, about 680 customers were affected, and the company said the incident was a “complex external impersonation scam” involving fraudulent information requests submitted through legitimate government agency domain email addresses.
The London-based digital bank said it notified law enforcement and declined to discuss the blackmail threat. According to Sina Finance, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office said it is investigating the matter. The report said the leak has raised customer safety concerns and drawn regulatory scrutiny, while Revolut continues its U.S. expansion plans after receiving preliminary permission earlier this month to provide banking services in the United States.
