Eli Roth Admits Limited AI Was Used After Ice Cream Man Faces Online Scrutiny

Horror director Eli Roth, best known for films including ‘Hostel’ and ‘Cabin Fever’, has acknowledged that generative AI was used in parts of his upcoming horror film ‘Ice Cream Man’ after online debate over the movie's production gathered pace.

The controversy began after early reviews of the $5.5 million horror film appeared online.

While critics were not impressed, with the film holding a 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 41/100 on Metacritic, much of the conversation quickly shifted away from the reviews and towards questions over its use of AI.

Why Did The Film's AI Use Become A Talking Point

Speculation grew after viewers noticed AI visual effects company Dark Half listed in the film's credits.

That prompted social media discussions, including a Reddit thread claiming generative AI had been used extensively throughout the production.

The claims gained more attention because they appeared to conflict with Roth's earlier explanation of one of the film's most memorable sequences.

Earlier Comments Focused On Hand Drawn Animation

Speaking to Polygon before the controversy, Roth described creating an eerie animated sequence inspired by Fleischer Studios and 1920s-era Mickey Mouse haunted house cartoons.

The animation appears on children's phones in the film and seemingly hypnotises them into becoming violent killers.

Roth explained that he personally created the artwork before working with animators to complete the sequence.

"I have an animation background and I drew it.”

He added that he wanted it to capture the flowing, jittery style of classic cartoons, saying he drew the loop cycles and frames before asking animators to make the movement smoother and another artist to give it "an old-timey jittery feel."

Roth Says He Misspoke About AI

After Polygon followed up about the film's production methods, Roth issued a new statement acknowledging that his earlier explanation was incomplete.

He said,

"I misspoke. AI was used in a very small portion of a few scenes in the film. It was an opportunity where technology and creativity came together to help bring my vision for the film to life."

Roth did not identify which scenes included generative AI or explain how the technology was used.

He only maintained that it appeared in "a very small portion of a few scenes."

Ice Cream Man Continues To Draw Attention Before Release

The film follows an ice cream truck driver, played by Ari Millen, whose frozen treats transform children in an otherwise peaceful summer town into homicidal killers.

With its 7 August 2026 cinema release approaching, ‘Ice Cream Man’ has become the latest film to face intense public debate over the use of generative AI in filmmaking, as audiences continue to scrutinise how the technology is being used in creative productions.
