SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins Says U.S. Is Preparing for 24-Hour Stock Trading

U.S. SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins said the agency is moving ahead with preparations to expand U.S. stock market trading to 24 hours a day. He said longer trading hours could help investors respond to market events more quickly, broaden global market participation, and improve liquidity. According to ChainCatcher, Atkins said DTCC has already launched a 23x5 trade capture system to support clearing and settlement, while the industry has also set overnight price bands and related risk controls for trading venues. He added that the Securities Information Processor is preparing to publish overnight price information, and said tokenization could help the securities industry manage inventory in real time, improve efficiency, reduce settlement failures, and lower naked short-selling risk.
