South Korea and Egypt Advance Next Month's Summit, With Energy Supply Chains in Focus

South Korea and Egypt are pushing to hold a summit next month, with cooperation on energy supply chains expected to be a core topic. According to Sina Finance, the agenda may also include the crude oil bypass transport network, whose importance has risen as Middle East tensions have worsened. The two sides are discussing the schedule for high-level talks, including arrangements for an Egyptian leader's visit to South Korea next month. A South Korean government official said the two countries are continuing consultations on the summit, but added that the exact schedule has not yet been finalized. If the summit takes place, it would be the first meeting since President Lee Jae-myung and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met in November last year. At that meeting, the two sides agreed to continue negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or CEPA, and Egypt would become the first African country to sign the pact with South Korea. At the time, President el-Sisi said he hoped South Korean petrochemical, auto, and shipbuilding companies would increase investment in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Energy supply chains may become an added focus at this summit, as instability in the Middle East has raised uncertainty over existing crude oil transport routes and increased the strategic value of the Mediterranean crude oil bypass network based on the Suez Canal and the SUMED Pipeline.
