Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Calls for Ban on Presidents Profiting From Crypto While in Office

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said on August 23 that Congress should prohibit the president, the president’s spouse and senior officials from issuing, promoting or profiting from cryptocurrencies while in office, and include the ethics ban in a digital asset market structure bill. According to Odaily, a survey found that 63% of respondents considered it improper for U.S. President Donald Trump and his family to profit from crypto, while Trump disclosed in his annual filing that his 2025 crypto-related income exceeded $1.4 billion. The dispute has also reached the Senate Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which is scheduled for its first procedural vote in the Senate on September 15. Gillibrand said she would not vote to support a president profiting from public office with taxpayer backing.
