Trump Administration Renews Supreme Court Appeal Over Mail Ballot Restrictions

According to CNBC, the Trump administration on Sunday renewed its appeal to the Supreme Court after a federal judge blocked new restrictions on mail ballots ahead of the midterms. U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani had extended an order barring the Postal Service from enforcing President Donald Trump's executive order for the November elections. Solicitor General John Sauer said in the filing that ballots had already begun to be mailed in North Carolina and that more states would start sending them out, including Alabama on September 9 and at least five states the week of September 13. The administration said the injunction could create confusion and chaos, while Democratic states and voting rights groups argued the changes are unconstitutional and election officials said they do not have enough time to revise their systems. The filing also said eligibility for mail-in and absentee voting will continue to be governed by state law, and that the Postal Service will not determine voter eligibility, maintain voter rolls or count ballots.
