Trump jabs press at White House Correspondents' dinner after April shooting

According to CNBC, President Donald Trump mocked journalists and political adversaries at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Friday, which was rescheduled after a shooting disrupted the original April event. The dinner, held at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, was moved from the Washington Hilton after a man tried to force his way through a security checkpoint and fired a shotgun outside the ballroom. The suspect, Cole Allen, pleaded not guilty in May to charges including attempting to assassinate the president. Trump said he believed in the free press and described himself as the most open and transparent president in history, while also saying that frequent interactions with reporters can help produce better stories. He spent more than an hour alternating between jokes, insults and remarks on issues including Iran and crime in Washington. The event also honored Secret Service officer Victor Gonzales and Washington Hilton staff for their role during the April attack.
