Germany Reaches Deal With US to Buy Tomahawk Missiles for Deployment in Germany

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Reuters, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on July 9 in Berlin that Germany has reached an agreement with the US government to purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles and deploy them in Germany. Merz told lawmakers he finalized the deal after meeting US officials during a NATO summit in Ankara, adding that the summit exceeded his expectations. He said the move would close a key strategic gap in Germany’s defense while Europe works to develop its own systems for deployment in Europe. The report noted that US President Donald Trump announced in May that the US would reduce its troop presence in Germany, a move seen as canceling the previous administration’s plan to deploy a system in Germany equipped with long-range Tomahawk missiles, leaving the decision unclear for a period.
