Crypto firms are preparing quantum-resistant upgrades after Google said encryption-breaking quantum computers could arrive by 2029. According to NS3.AI, the prospect of quantum advances has prompted renewed focus on whether current cryptography used across major blockchains could be vulnerable.
An unpublished June 2026 working paper estimated that roughly 35% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply could be exposed to a quantum computing attack. People interviewed also said none of the top 20 blockchains have implemented a post-quantum signature algorithm.
The report highlights a gap between perceived quantum risk and the pace of adoption of post-quantum cryptographic signatures across leading networks, as firms consider upgrades intended to reduce potential exposure.
