Injective CEO Eric Chen Says Layer-1 Blockchains Face Rising Pressure to Trade Decentralization for Speed

Layer-1 blockchains are likely to face growing pressure to sacrifice decentralization in pursuit of faster speeds and greater efficiency as adoption expands, according to Injective CEO Eric Chen. According to Cointelegraph, Chen said on the Chain Reaction podcast on Monday that user demand for higher throughput—either through faster performance or more block space—will intensify the scaling debate across major networks. He framed the challenge as finding ways to scale without undermining the core characteristics that define blockchains, especially as adoption accelerates through institutional participation and agentic AI finance. Chen noted that crypto’s early promise centered on enabling a “trustless” financial system where individuals can transact without relying on traditional intermediaries, a goal that can be strained when networks prioritize performance over decentralization. Chen argued that centralization can appear to be the simplest solution, such as consolidating activity into a single data warehouse or relying on a dominant validator, but he said this approach introduces a single point of failure. If a centralized component fails, he warned, the entire chain could go down. He added that Injective, which he described as an interoperable layer-1 blockchain designed for DeFi applications, is focused on optimizing the chain without necessarily reducing block time. As an alternative, Chen pointed to “scaling venues,” including dedicated zones and layer-2 scaling, as potential ways to ensure high-demand transactions are processed. He characterized scaling as a persistent “tug-of-war” shaped by the need to preserve blockchain fundamentals while adapting to where the broader ecosystem moves. Chen also referenced the blockchain trilemma—the idea that security, decentralization, and scalability cannot all be fully optimized at once—saying that pushing too hard on scalability can come at the expense of decentralization.
