Why Korean and Pakistani stocks got so turbulent The volatility spike in South Korean and Pakistani equities is not a mystery — it traces directly to the energy shock triggered by the war between Iran and the U.S.-Israeli coalition, which began on February 28. The eventual closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil supply routes, sent energy prices sharply higher and hit economies with heavy fossil fuel import dependence particularly hard. South Korea imports nearly all of its oil and natural gas, making its equity market acutely sensitive to disruptions in Middle Eastern supply chains. The Kospi fell from 6,340 points in late February to 5,000 by end of March — a decline of more than 20% — before rebounding to record highs above 6,380 as the conflict eased and a temporary ceasefire was negotiated.
