G20 Supports Clearer Regulatory Path for Digital Assets Ahead of U.S. 2026 Presidency

G20 finance ministers and central bank governors met in Asheville, North Carolina, from August 31 to September 1 and backed a clearer regulatory path for digital asset growth. According to Odaily, the group also added digital assets to the agenda for the U.S. 2026 presidency. The G20 said digital financial innovation can support broad economic growth and noted that the private sector plays an important role in driving related innovation. It also listed global stablecoins, cross-border payments, and extended operating hours for large-value payment systems as key topics, while supporting the adoption of the ISO 20022 data standard. The G20 called on the Financial Action Task Force to prioritize jurisdictions with large virtual asset activity and strengthen enforcement of anti-money laundering standards. As of July, only one of the 149 jurisdictions assessed by the FATF fully complied with the relevant standards, while 34% were broadly compliant, 43% were partially compliant, and 22% were non-compliant.
