Mastercard Economist: Mainland Tourists’ Shopping Share Fell to 44% in Q1 From 70.5% in 2018

Mastercard Economics Institute’s Northeast Asia senior economist Li Wei said market data show mainland Chinese tourists’ shopping spending as a share of total travel consumption fell to 44% in the first quarter from 70.5% in 2018, according to Ming Pao. Li said mainland tourists have shifted from primarily shopping to spending more on dining and cultural experiences. For non-mainland tourists, spending on shopping increased, accounting for 31.4% of their total travel spending in the first quarter.
