UK Supermarket Promotions Lead to Lowest Food Inflation Since April

Food inflation in the UK has dropped to its lowest level since April of last year, driven by the popularity of supermarket own brands and promotional activities. According to Jin10, in the four weeks leading up to January 25, the inflation rate for similar food items slightly decreased to 4% compared to the same period last year. This data, released by Worldpanel, a subsidiary of Numerator, offers some relief to consumers facing tight budgets. The latest figures indicate that household budgets remain under pressure, especially after some supermarkets reported lower-than-expected sales during the crucial Christmas period. Although the rate of increase in food prices slowed last month, it still surpasses the overall inflation rate in the UK. The Bank of England anticipates that the overall inflation rate will fall to its 2% target in the next quarter. Fraser McKevitt, Head of Retail and Consumer Insight at Worldpanel, noted, "For most shoppers, January is typically a month to replan household budgets, and this year is no exception. While food sales continue to grow and inflation has reached its lowest level in months, 'value for money' remains a top priority for many."
