SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda took issue with SEC Chairman Gary Gensler's approach when it comes to cryptocurrency regulation, saying that while the easiest regulatory response to cryptocurrency and digital asset innovation is to 'shut everything down' under the pretext of bad actors, regulators should create a compliant path for legitimate efforts. "The SEC has not yet developed that path."
Mark Uyeda, a supporter of a spot Bitcoin ETF, opposed the SEC's rejection of Coinbase's rulemaking request, and he and fellow Commissioner Hester Peirce questioned the SEC's approach to NFTs and called on the agency to answer jurisdictional questions when it comes to tokenized digital art. All this suggests that there seems to be a serious split within the SEC's leadership. What's more, this split comes as the agency is waging, or preparing for possible, legal battles with some of the industry's biggest companies: Coinbase, Binance, Uniswap, Consensys, and Kraken.
