Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren is expected to become chair of the Senate Banking Committee in January, after Democrats take control of Congress. According to Odaily, the party is expected to decide committee assignments in the coming weeks. As chair, Warren would have more staff, subpoena authority and power to require testimony, as well as control over the committee’s agenda.
A person familiar with the matter said Warren may investigate the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s approval of a bank charter for Trump-backed World Liberty Financial in August this year. The U.S. President Donald Trump administration’s mass dismissals of financial regulators and efforts to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau may also draw scrutiny.
Warren is expected to pursue issues with bipartisan support, particularly reducing the cost of living. This year, she helped advance bipartisan housing affordability legislation and joined Republican lawmakers in proposing a bill to restrict exports of advanced chips and other technology.
