According to CNBC, the Federal Reserve’s October Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey showed U.S. banks tightening lending standards in the third quarter, particularly for small businesses, commercial real estate and riskier borrowers. The survey, published Nov. 2, collected responses from 61 domestic banks and 18 U.S. branches of foreign lenders and tracks reported lending standards, terms and demand rather than actual loan volumes. Banks reported weaker demand for loans across commercial real estate categories and tighter standards for nonbank financial firms. Household credit conditions were mixed: mortgage standards were broadly unchanged, while banks reported tighter rules for subprime loans and weaker demand across residential real estate loan categories.
