Ethereum Foundation researcher frisitano has published a draft EIP titled “Post-Quantum PeerDAS and Variable-Size Blobs.” According to Foresight News, the proposal would replace PeerDAS’s KZG commitments and proofs with per-blob Keccak-256 Merkle commitments and authentication paths, alongside LeanDA STARK proofs. These proofs would recompute Merkle roots, check Reed-Solomon coding relationships and verify that commitments match the data, eliminating the need for a trusted setup and increasing quantum resistance.
The draft also proposes variable-size blobs with byte lengths from 2,048 to 524,288, in powers of two and divisible by 128. Blobs would retain 128 data cells while their overall size varies. Execution-layer transactions would carry a Merkle root and byte length instead of a versioned hash, with corresponding changes to networking and gas accounting.
