Philip Wong: Only 17% of His Former Ph.D. Students Joined Chip Manufacturers

Philip Wong, a former TSMC chief scientist and Stanford professor, found that only 17% of his former doctoral students went to companies that manufacture chips; most chose chip-design or chip-application firms and other organizations. According to Sina Finance, a McKinsey report with an industry group identified engineers as the main constraint on U.S. chip production, estimating a workforce gap of up to 157,000 and warning that shortages could delay new fabs. A congressional report said labor and supply-chain shortages had forced TSMC and Micron to delay previously announced factory plans in Arizona and New York.
