House GOP Delays Pete Hegseth Impeachment Vote Until After Midterm Election

According to CNBC, Republican leaders said the U.S. House will leave Washington a day earlier than planned, avoiding a possible vote to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth until after this year's midterm election. House Speaker Mike Johnson's decision shortens an already light work period in a month when the chamber will meet for just six days, and lawmakers are now not due back in Washington until after the Nov. 3 election. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., unveiled the impeachment plans on Tuesday and said the move was intended to avoid a politically awkward vote over allegations that Hegseth carried out unauthorized military actions in Iran. Massie also said the schedule change would make it harder to gather 218 signatures on a separate discharge petition tied to Jeffrey Epstein files. The House approved a war powers resolution Tuesday night by a 220-204 vote ordering the White House to end the Iran war, with seven Republicans joining Democrats.
