Australian AI infrastructure company Firmus said on September 8 that it has signed a multi-year strategic partnership with OpenAI, under which OpenAI will buy dedicated AI compute from two of Firmus' AI factories in Malaysia and become its anchor customer. According to Jiemian News, the deal lifts Firmus' contracted total compute capacity to more than 900 megawatts.
Firmus said it currently has seven AI factories across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, with two in operation and five under construction, and plans to bring them into service over the next 24 months. The facilities will deploy Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 systems and use Nvidia's DSX AI Factory platform as well as Firmus' in-house HyperCube liquid-cooling infrastructure. OpenAI said the new data center in Malaysia will help meet growing product demand in Asia-Pacific and globally.
