Banco do Brasil said it invested $5 million of its own funds in a digital-native structured note issued by Citi and completed through Euroclear’s Digital Financial Market Infrastructure platform, marking the first transaction of its kind in Latin America. According to ChainCatcher, the bank said blockchain technology can enable native digital asset issuance, reduce operational steps, and improve transaction traceability, laying the groundwork for new trading, settlement, and asset management models.
The bank said the investment aligns with its ongoing focus on changes in the financial industry. Banco do Brasil wholesale banking vice president Franscisco Lassalvia said decentralized digital technology has become a long-term structural trend in financial markets. Citi global markets equity structured products manager Roksolana Dushynska said distributed ledger technology can improve capital market efficiency, transparency, and investor access. Banco do Brasil previously took part in the Brazilian central bank’s Drex digital currency pilot and proposed an offline payment solution.
