STOCKS | Goolsbee Says Inflation Is the Fed's Top Priority

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said inflation is the Federal Reserve's top priority. According to Sina Finance, he made the remarks in an interview at the Jackson Hole annual meeting in Wyoming on Friday, adding that inflation has lasted longer than expected and that price increases driven by overheated demand are clearly harder to curb. Goolsbee said he agreed with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's assessment of current economic details and did not give a specific rate path for the September 15-16 policy meeting. He also said he had no strong view on how many times the Federal Open Market Committee meets each year and did not think the Fed and the Treasury were at odds. He said keeping the policy rate unchanged at the July meeting was an acceptable decision. He said the federal funds target range has remained at 3.50% to 3.75% since December 2025 and did not say whether he supported raising that range at the September meeting. He also said the biggest near-term concern remains inflation failing to stabilize, while noting that the latest three months of inflation data did not look bad and that policy rates could still be cut if prices move back toward 2%.
