Hong Kong police have revealed a cryptocurrency scam involving a 66-year-old retiree. According to Odaily, the victim fell prey to fraudulent schemes by so-called 'cryptocurrency investment experts' starting in September 2025. Initially, the retiree lost HKD 1.4 million, and in an attempt to recover the losses, paid another HKD 600,000 as a guarantee to a different 'expert.' Subsequently, the victim was persuaded to purchase HKD 4.6 million worth of cryptocurrency and transfer it to a specified account. After receiving the funds, the scammers disappeared, resulting in a total loss of HKD 6.6 million over six months. The victim eventually sought police assistance. Authorities caution against trusting 'guaranteed' investment opportunities and services claiming to recover losses, as they may lead to further scams.
