Barclays Predicts Impact of Oil Prices on European Earnings

Barclays Bank anticipates that if oil prices remain around $100 per barrel and economic growth stagnates, the earnings per share (EPS) growth rate for European companies is likely to fall to low single-digit levels. According to Odaily, the STOXX Europe 600 Index could drop to approximately 550 points. Historical data indicates that during periods of stagflation, sectors such as energy, utilities, and healthcare tend to perform better, while finance, telecommunications, and consumer sectors often lag. The bank's report highlights that despite a decrease in the energy consumption intensity of the economy over time, growth remains at risk due to Europe's 30% dependency on Middle Eastern energy supplies.
