FAO Official Warns Hormuz Disruption Could Cut Global Food Output in 2026-27

Oleg Kobyakov, head of the Food and Agriculture Organization's liaison office in the Russian Federation, said disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would reduce global food production and supply in the second half of 2026 and in 2027. According to Jiemian News, he said the disruption would not only affect current food prices but also weigh on output in the next agricultural season. He added that even a delay of a few weeks in fertilizer deliveries could cause farmers to miss the optimal application window, forcing them to cut back or stop using fertilizer and ultimately reducing grain output. Kobyakov said the crisis could also push up food prices and worsen hunger in countries and regions already facing long-term or severe food insecurity. He noted that the Strait of Hormuz is also an important route for urea and other fertilizer products from the region to reach global markets, and said supply chains in multiple countries and regions have been hit after the military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel on February 28.
