Former FTC Commissioner Dismisses AI Doom Warnings From Big Labs

Former FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya dismissed warnings that AI could cause human extinction, arguing humans have survived far worse and that such claims should not be taken seriously. According to BeInCrypto, Bedoya said antitrust law is no barrier to legitimate safety coordination among AI labs, citing a 2014 DOJ-FTC memo on cybersecurity information sharing. He also said efforts to seek broad antitrust waivers should be viewed skeptically, while OpenAI chief Sam Altman said the company does not need to wait for an exemption or legislation to begin safety work.
