Bitcoin-denominated open contracts fell from 321,497 on September 3 to 278,151 on September 11 — a reduction of 43,346 contracts, or 13.5%, according to Santiment.Bitcoin's price declined roughly 5% over the same period. That gap is the point: the drop in open interest was not caused by the fall in price. The Denomination Is What Makes the Reading CleanMeasuring open interest in BTC rather than dollars removes the mechanical effect price has on the figure.Dollar-denominated open interest falls automatically when price falls, even if every position stays exactly where it was. A 5% price decline produces a 5% decline in notional value with no trader doing anything.Contract counts denominated in BTC do not behave that way. A 13.5% reduction against a 5% price drop means roughly 43,000 contracts were actually closed rather than revalued. That distinction separates deleveraging from arithmetic, and most open interest coverage does not make it.Positioning Sits 20% Below Pre-Rally LevelsSantiment places current positioning about 20% below where it stood before the mid-August rally. That rally carried Bitcoin from roughly $62,000 to $82,284, and the leverage that accumulated through it has now been substantially removed while price has given back only part of the gain. The reading is consistent with other measures of the same condition. The aggregated long/short accounts ratio stands at 1.114, with longs at 52.67% against shorts at 47.29%. Funding remains positive but subdued at 0.0036%.ARP Digital's Yusuf Fakhro made a related observation in early September, noting perpetual open interest at its lowest since May and arguing there was no crowded leveraged long left to unwind. The Santiment figures quantify how much further that has gone.Deleveraging Stopped on CPI DayThe timing detail is the most actionable part of the release.Positions stopped declining on September 11 and rebounded slightly across the two following trading days.September 11 was the CPI release. Core came in at 0.3% against 0.2% expected, sending the two-year Treasury yield to 4.61% as traders assigned nearly a 100% chance of a hike.Deleveraging that halts precisely at the data point suggests the reduction was preparatory rather than reactive. Traders reduced exposure into the event and then stopped, which is the opposite sequence from a market being forced out by losses.Risk-Taking Happened Before the Events, Not During ThemSantiment's conclusion follows directly: market risk-taking occurred primarily ahead of this week's important events rather than during them. That describes a market that positioned deliberately rather than one that got caught. The distinction matters for what happens Wednesday.A market carrying heavy leverage into an FOMC decision faces liquidation risk in both directions, because forced flow amplifies whatever the initial move is. A market 20% below pre-rally positioning has considerably less of that mechanism available.LMAX Group's Joel Kruger flagged where the resulting asymmetry sits: "A good deal of the hawkish risk is arguably priced in. We see greater potential for an outsized move in risk assets to the topside should the Fed ultimately fail to deliver on these hawkish expectations."Light positioning cuts both ways on that. It limits the downside cascade, and it also means less short covering fuel if the surprise arrives. The Spot Picture Has Not Improved Alongside ItReduced leverage is not the same as returning demand, and the two have moved in opposite directions.CryptoQuant's spot demand metric sits at −145,000 BTC after nearly turning positive at −5,000 in late August. The Coinbase premium index fell to −0.036. Crypto ETFs saw $308 million of net outflows on September 10, the worst single day in two months.A market with neutral leverage and deteriorating spot demand does not face liquidation cascades. It also lacks the bid required to absorb supply, which is the configuration that produces grinding declines rather than violent ones.Bitcoin traded around $77,300 after Friday's release, having dipped to $76,046 before the print and rebounded above $79,000 immediately after. Two Events Land Within Two DaysGlassnode data shows nearly 8% of Bitcoin's supply was acquired between $80,000 and $82,000 — the largest concentration at any comparable range — with the US spot ETF cohort's average cost basis in the same band and the 50-week moving average at $81,081.Clearing that requires sustained spot demand rather than leverage, and the deleveraging data confirms the leverage is not there to supply it.The Clarity Act cloture vote falls Tuesday, needing 60 votes with Democrats continuing to flag the absent bipartisan ethics agreement. The Fed decides Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET, with updated projections and a Warsh press conference following.
