AI TRENDS | Google and Cathay Pacific Test AI to Cut Contrail Warming

Alphabet's Google and Cathay Pacific are working together to use artificial intelligence to address one of aviation's most visible but least addressed climate problems. According to Sina Finance, the companies said early operational trials on dozens of Cathay Pacific routes at the end of 2025 showed that the warming effect from contrails fell 40% when pilots were guided to avoid atmospheric areas where contrails are likely to form. Google said the solution is currently free and combines predictive AI models, satellite imagery, and weather data to identify contrail-prone areas. The information is then turned into operational advice, such as adjusting flight altitude, allowing flight planners and crews to avoid specific airspace. Cathay Pacific is the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to trial Google's AI contrail-mitigation technology and the first airline globally to test contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights. Google previously carried out similar trials with American Airlines Group Inc. Cathay Pacific Digital and Information Technology Director Lawrence Fong said in a joint statement that the collaboration combines top-tier technology with operational expertise and shows how data, artificial intelligence, and innovation can be used to solve real-world challenges at scale. Google's Zurich-based contrail research lead Kemal Armada said the approach offers a climate response for existing aircraft fleets and current fuel types. He added that while small altitude adjustments at the right time and under specific atmospheric conditions can avoid clouds that may persist for hours, wider adoption still faces regulatory requirements, airspace constraints, and airline concerns over cost and safety.
