The U.S. packaged meat segment posted sales and operating profit declines of 3% and 12%, with volume down 5%, average selling price up 3% and unit profit down 7% to $937 per tonne, partly due to the Easter holiday calendar shift. In China, second-quarter operating profit fell 8% to $203 million. The pork segment recorded an operating profit loss of $5 million, while the packaged meat segment posted sales up 7% and operating profit down 2%. Volume and average selling price rose 3% and 4%, but unit profit fell 6% to $595 per tonne as marketing spending increased. In Europe, second-quarter operating profit dropped 23% to $74 million.
