A criminal court in Paris sentenced a Ukrainian man to five years in prison, with two years to serve and three years suspended, for illegally minting and stealing 1 billion Holograph (HLG) tokens. According to Odaily, the offenses took place between May and August 2024, when he exploited a vulnerability at a company where he had worked; the tokens were worth about $14 million at the time. The court found that he altered the platform’s token-minting conditions, transferred the tokens to a personal wallet and then worked with two accomplices to distribute the funds across accounts at several cryptocurrency exchanges. One accomplice received a two-year sentence, with 14 months suspended, and an €80,000 fine; the other received a two-year suspended sentence and a €40,000 fine. The court rejected the Holograph Foundation’s claim for compensation over the token’s price decline, saying HLG had already experienced substantial price fluctuations and a direct causal link between the alleged fraud and its subsequent depreciation could not be established. HLG fell from nearly $0.03 in May 2024 to $0.001 by the end of December that year.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ordered the Justice Department to immediately investigate what he called Democratic “extortion.” According to Odaily, Trump accused Democrats of threatening to impeach the attorney general and other officials and impose additional penalties, despite what he said was a lack of grounds for doing so. Trump also accused Democrats of threatening Republican donors with imprisonment because of their political affiliation. He said Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin had threatened to pursue young people who identify with Republican values or show support for the party. Trump described the alleged conduct as political weaponization and lawfare, said those he called extortionists should be imprisoned, and urged Republicans to act quickly.

Nvidia-backed AI data center operator Groq has invited investors to participate in a Series B round at an $8 billion pre-money valuation. According to Odaily, the proposed financing would more than double Groq’s valuation in about three months. The fundraising effort comes as shares of data center operators CoreWeave and Nebius have recently sold off amid concerns about the sustainability of large-scale borrowing to build AI infrastructure. Late last year, Nvidia recruited Groq founder and CEO Jonathan Ross and other key employees through a $20 billion technology licensing deal.
