AI TRENDS | OpenAI to Announce Expanded Access for Critical Infrastructure and Public Sector

OpenAI spokespersons said President Greg Brockman will announce expanded access to the company’s AI tools for critical infrastructure and public sector organizations. According to Sina Finance, Brockman will formally unveil the move on Thursday at a cybersecurity summit at OpenAI’s headquarters. About 300 corporate security leaders and chief information security officers from Fortune 100 companies are expected to attend. The summit will focus on how companies, governments, and cybersecurity vendors can help defenders, including critical infrastructure organizations and public service departments, use AI tools. OpenAI said the conference and the upcoming announcement are a response to model safety risks. The company cited the Hugging Face breach, as well as multiple suspected AI-enabled cyberattacks targeting U.S. water systems, and said its upcoming Astra model already has “critical-level” cyberattack capability. OpenAI last week issued an open letter warning organizations that they have only months to prepare for AI-powered cyberattacks. Brockman also issued a similar warning in an article last month. The company said improving awareness around critical infrastructure protection is only the first step and does not solve the funding shortages and talent gaps many of these organizations face.
