Chinese authorities have detained a man from Henan province accused of torturing approximately 1,500 stray cats to death in exchange for cryptocurrency payments. According to NS3.AI, the individual, identified as Ma, has been placed under administrative detention for a period of 10 days. A rescue organization reportedly spent several months connecting Ma to a private Telegram group that allegedly commissioned custom videos of cat torture.
Legal experts have noted that the case may present challenges for prosecutors due to the ambiguous legal protections for stray cats in China. A lawyer speaking to China Newsweek highlighted the potential complexities involved in pursuing charges against Ma, given the current legal framework surrounding animal welfare.
