GPT-Next aka Strawberry to be 100x Times More Powerful

At the 2024 KDDI Summit, OpenAI Japan CEO Tadao Nagasaki revealed that the upcoming GPT-Next model will be 100 times more powerful than GPT-4, thanks to key architectural innovations.

A scaled-down version of the mysterious OpenAI Project Strawberry is said to be a central part of these improvements, enhancing the model's overall efficacy.

This marks a shift in OpenAI's approach, focusing more on architecture than raw computing power.

Codenamed "Strawberry," GPT-Next is set for release by the end of the year, while "Orion," another advanced AI model, is expected in 2025.

Researchers describe GPT-Next as incorporating "System 2 thinking," signalling a new era in AI development.

ChatGPT Needs to Keep Evolving

Nagasaki emphasized the importance of advancing AI models like GPT-Next to keep pace with the rapid growth of AI technology.

In his address, he highlighted the widespread adoption of ChatGPT, which had reached 200 million active users by the end of August, making it the fastest software in history to achieve such a large user base.

Nagasaki attributed this success to the platform's user-friendly design, which has made it accessible to a broad audience.

He also noted a growing trend of businesses opting for ChatGPT Enterprise.

Additionally, Nagasaki discussed OpenAI’s decision to establish its first Asian headquarters in Japan.

He pointed to Japan's strong tradition of embracing innovation and emerging technologies as a key factor in the choice, aligning with OpenAI's mission to push the boundaries of AI development.

OpenAI Keeping Pace with AI's Rapid Growth

OpenAI employs around 2,000 people globally, with half dedicated to AI development.

While the company has strong footholds in the US and UK, its expansion into Japan underscores the nation's significance in the global AI landscape.

OpenAI’s decision to establish a base in Japan reflects its recognition of the country's role in technological innovation.

Nagasaki, who became CEO of OpenAI Japan in April 2024, shared insights from his extensive tech career, including his tenure as CEO of Amazon Web Services Japan from 2011 to 2024.

His experience has shaped his vision for OpenAI's growth in the region.

In line with its rapid AI advancements, OpenAI is actively building infrastructure to support the industry's growth.

The company plans to expand operations across multiple US states, committing tens of billions of dollars in investment to fuel its long-term vision.

OpenAI's Future Releases

OpenAI has begun training GPT-5, with its release anticipated in late 2024 or early 2025.

During his presentation, Nagasaki hinted at an even more advanced model expected in 2025, evidenced by a slide outlining OpenAI's roadmap.

If the claims of a 100-fold improvement hold true, OpenAI's future could be even more groundbreaking, solidifying its leadership in AI development.

Expanding beyond the consumer market, the company launched ChatGPT Enterprise in August 2023, rapidly gaining traction among businesses.

OpenAI reports that more than 80% of Fortune 500 companies have adopted the technology, with early adopters including Canva, PwC, and Zapier.

He noted during the conference:
