Fincantieri Plans 600 Million Euro Underwater Expansion as Seabed Security Gains Focus

According to CNBC, Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri announced in July plans to acquire majority stakes in four companies for around 600 million euros ($689 million) as it expands into underwater and surface drones, marine surveying and subsea communications. The article said governments and defense companies are investing more heavily in technologies for underwater surveillance and seabed protection as concerns rise over the vulnerability of cables, pipelines and other critical infrastructure. Euroatlas said it has signed more than 100 million euros in GrayShark contracts with unnamed European navies, while TeleGeography said more than 1.5 million kilometers of submarine communications cables were in service globally as of early 2026.
