Australia Considers Setting Price Floor for Critical Minerals to Boost Investment

Australia is evaluating the establishment of a price floor for critical minerals, including rare earth elements, to attract foreign investment for new mining and processing projects. According to Jin10, as the world's fourth-largest holder of rare earth reserves, Australia is collaborating with other nations to consider setting minimum prices for these essential minerals, which are widely used in the defense and technology sectors. Australian Resources Minister Madeleine King announced at a press conference in Washington, D.C., that the policy would be supported by the Australian Export Finance Agency, the government's export credit institution. Currently, representatives from multiple countries are gathering in Washington for a critical minerals summit convened by the Trump administration. Similar to the United States, Australia plans to establish its own critical minerals reserve, albeit on a smaller scale, with an initial focus on procuring rare earth elements, antimony, and gallium. The reserve is valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars (approximately 843 million USD). Following this announcement, shares of key mineral companies listed in Sydney saw an increase on Wednesday. Lynas Rare Earths surged by 6.9%, Iluka Resources rose by 5.2%, Arafura Rare Earths climbed by 6.3%, and Sunrise Energy experienced a 10% jump in early trading.
