On November 7, Swiss drugmaker Novartis said it would stop developing its experimental cardiovascular drug pelacarsen for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease after a trial found no reduction in heart attacks, strokes, or cardiovascular deaths. According to Sina Finance, the seven-year Phase III Lp(a) HORIZON trial enrolled 8,322 patients and found that pelacarsen lowered lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), by an average of 78%, but showed no clear cardiovascular benefit in any patient subgroup. The study was the first completed Phase III cardiovascular outcomes trial targeting Lp(a), a lipoprotein largely influenced by genetics and associated with higher risks of atherosclerosis and blood clots; about 20% of the global population has genetically elevated Lp(a). Senior study author Steven Nissen, a cardiovascular specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, called the results “completely neutral,” saying the drug had neither benefit nor harm. Novartis will retain one mid-stage study to assess whether pelacarsen can slow the progression of calcific aortic stenosis. The drug had previously been viewed as a potential blockbuster, with annual sales once expected to reach billions of dollars; the trial result presents a new challenge for strategies to prevent cardiovascular events by lowering Lp(a).

Web3Auth said it is working with Keplr to move assets from affected wallets to secure recovery wallets following a wallet security incident. According to Odaily, Web3Auth published verified recovery wallet addresses for Cosmos Hub, Osmosis, Celestia, Akash, Noble, Injective, dYdX, Babylon, Axelar, Saga and Agoric, as well as EVM addresses spanning eight chains, after some recovery transfers were mistaken for attacker activity. Web3Auth said the listed addresses are being used to transfer affected assets safely and are not controlled by attackers. It plans to publish more verified addresses and advised users to follow official announcements and beware of impersonation scams and fake asset recovery requests.

On November 8, Goldman Sachs said persistent speculative outflows were a major reason for the recent sharp decline in international gold prices. According to Sina Finance, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) positioning data showed that managed funds, other traders, and non-reportable traders collectively cut about $8 billion in gold positions from October 20 to 27, marking a fifth consecutive week of net outflows. Since September 22, cumulative speculative outflows from the gold market have reached $19.5 billion. Of the $8 billion outflow from October 20 to 27, about $5.2 billion came from long liquidations and $2.8 billion from new short positions. Other traders and non-reportable traders accounted for about 95% of the outflow. Long-position reductions by the other-trader category alone totaled $4 billion, making nontraditional investors the main force behind the selling, Goldman Sachs said. Goldman Sachs said large-scale speculative selling explained why gold failed to benefit from falling real interest rates. From October 20 to 27, the U.S. 10-year real Treasury yield fell 11 basis points, which would typically support gold, a non-yielding asset, but gold prices declined 1.6% over the same period. The U.S. dollar index rose 0.6% and Brent crude gained 4.1%, adding to the downward pressure on gold. Analysts said concerns about sovereign liquidity management and a strong dollar may have prompted some investors to exit gold positions. Selling pressure may not have fully run its course. Although managed funds’ net positions were relatively low, as of October 27, other traders’ long gold positions remained above the median of the past two years both in nominal value and as a share of open interest, suggesting room for further liquidations. Gold prices fell another 4.3% from October 27 to 30, while Brent crude rose a further 3.7%. Options markets also began to reflect bearish sentiment: gold’s three-month implied volatility increased, and the 25-delta put-call skew rose to the 85th percentile of its range over the past year, indicating increased downside hedging and bearish bets.

Trust Wallet CEO Felix said on X that Trust Wallet was not affected by the Web3Auth security issue. According to Odaily, Web3Auth previously disclosed a security issue affecting services used by some third parties and temporarily suspended its embedded wallet service.
