Base plans to activate the B20 token standard on its mainnet at 2:00 AM (UTC+8) on July 9. According to Foresight News, Base had previously scheduled the B20 token format activation for 2:00 AM (UTC+8) on June 27, but later postponed it due to stability reasons. B20 is Base’s native token format. Base said the standard is intended to improve user experience through faster, lower-cost, and more standardized settlement mechanisms, and to enable global financial assets to exist on Base as programmable capital with on-chain composability.

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Reuters, a software testing team that previously took part in Australia’s government age-verification trials found that social media platforms did not ask for proof of age when it created 50 test accounts after Australia’s social media law took effect in December, requiring platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube to bar users under 16 from opening accounts. KJR director Hammond said all 50 accounts, which declared an age of 16, remain active; some received ads for youth banking products and one account on X was recommended pornographic content. The test found that if users declared they were under 16, all platforms rejected registration. Snap and TikTok declined to comment, while Google and X did not respond. A Meta spokesperson said the test appeared inconsistent with regulator guidance, which calls for escalation to formal age verification only when a platform detects behavior suggesting a user may be underage or when an account is reported. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner’s office said it remains confident platforms have sufficient technology and resources to prevent under-16 Australian children from opening accounts.

Hong Kong Monetary Authority chief executive Eddie Yue said a planned increase in the quota for the Southbound Bond Connect trading scheme is necessary after People’s Bank of China governor Pan Gongsheng announced the quota will be expanded from 500 billion yuan to 800 billion yuan, according to RTHK. Yue said there is clear demand for a higher quota for the scheme, which allows onshore investors to access Hong Kong’s bond market. He noted that coverage was extended last year to include asset managers, brokers and insurance companies in addition to banks, and said the quota has been well utilized. Yue also welcomed a planned expansion of the HKMA’s RMB Business Facility from 200 billion yuan to 500 billion yuan. He said the facility’s size was doubled from 100 billion to 200 billion yuan early this year, but that the 200 billion yuan has already been used up, with more banks seeking to participate. He said the expanded RMB Business Facility would help meet demand for stable and lower-cost yuan funding and support broader global use of the currency, including via Hong Kong’s banking network into markets such as the Middle East, ASEAN and Europe.

HSBC is seeking to roll out digitalized or tokenized gold products that it believes could facilitate 24-hour trading, according to Ming Pao, citing remarks by HSBC Asia and Middle East Co-CEO David Liao at the Hong Kong Fixed Income and Currency Summit and Bond Connect Forum. Liao said tokenization would not change gold’s underlying nature. He added that HSBC, together with its subsidiary Hang Seng Bank, already sells gold products via online apps. Liao said HSBC Group has been involved in the gold market for 150 years and has developed global operations and vault storage facilities.
