Ripple is a real-time gross settlement system, currency exchange, and remittance network created by Ripple Labs Inc., a US-based technology company. Released in 2012, Ripple is based on a distributed open source protocol and supports tokens representing fiat currency, cryptocurrency, commodities, or other units of value. It claims to enable "secure, instant, and nearly free global financial transactions of any size with no chargebacks".

What Is XRP / XRP Ledger?

Launched in 2021, the [XRP Ledger (XRPL)](http://www.xrpl.org) is an open-source, permissionless and decentralized technology. Benefits of the XRP Ledger include its low-cost ($0.0002 to transact), speed (settling transactions in 3-5 seconds), scalability (1,500 transactions per second) and inherently green attributes (carbon-neutral and energy-efficient).
