South Africa’s Crypto Economy Grew 52% in Bear Market as Draft Rules Face Revision

South Africa’s crypto economy grew 52% to $39.3 billion in the year to June 2026 despite a global bear market, led by cross-border stablecoin transfers and crypto services. According to BeInCrypto, draft rules would require individuals to route offshore crypto transfers through authorized local providers and bar companies from moving crypto across borders; Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said on October 21 that Treasury would publish a revised draft after thousands of public comments. Chainalysis said all tracked activity categories grew, while regional P2P stablecoin inflows reached $14.6 billion in 2026, matching BTC. Treasury and SARB published the draft on August 3; it is not yet in force.
