Sam Altman to Brief UN Security Council on AI and International Security Next Week

OpenAI spokesperson said CEO Sam Altman will brief a public meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York next week during the UN General Assembly. According to ChainCatcher, the 15-member council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday on artificial intelligence and international security, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot set to preside. Diplomats said Anthropic executives are also expected to attend, though that has not been confirmed. Altman is expected to focus on international coordination, shared safety standards, and measures OpenAI has taken to benefit people worldwide. France's concept note for the meeting cited the risk of malicious misuse of artificial intelligence and the urgency of acting to promote safe and responsible development. The Security Council first held a meeting on AI risks in 2023.
