U.S. Treasury Yields Little Changed Ahead of Fed Decision

According to CNBC, U.S. Treasury yields were little changed Wednesday morning as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's two-day September meeting, with the benchmark 10-year yield flat at 5.004% at 4:30 a.m. ET and the 20-year and 30-year yields unchanged at 5.409% and 5.372%, respectively. The Federal Open Market Committee is set to announce its latest monetary policy decision at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, while fed funds futures were pricing in a roughly 92.5% chance of a quarter-point hike, up from 33% a month ago. Friday data showed the U.S. annual inflation rate at 3.4% in August, and the personal consumption expenditures price index rose 3.7% year over year in July. Brent Wilsey of Wilsey Asset Management said a Fed hold could surprise stocks, hurt the central bank's credibility and revive concerns that it is yielding to political pressure to keep rates steady. Jonathan Pryor of Marex said the Fed is entering a new phase of monetary policy, after earlier in the year it appeared to be in a rate-cutting cycle that could have lasted six or 12 months.
