US Judge Blocks Trump Rule Limiting Foreign Students’ and Journalists’ Stay

A federal judge in the United States on Monday suspended enforcement of a new Trump administration rule that would limit how long foreign students, journalists, and other nonimmigrant visa holders can stay in the country without a visa extension. According to Sina Finance, Boston federal district judge F. Dennis Saylor issued the ruling one day before the administration had planned to put the rule into effect. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the rule in July as part of the Trump administration's broader effort to tighten immigration controls, saying it was aimed at what it called visa abuse by foreign students, exchange visitors, and media representatives. Under the rule, the maximum stay for holders of F nonimmigrant student visas and J exchange visitor visas would be capped at four years, while most foreign journalists would initially be limited to 240 days and could apply for one extension of up to 240 days.
