U.S. Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis again criticized Democrats for delaying the long-awaited Clarity Act, saying the bill could fail if Democrats do not join Republicans in supporting the bipartisan measure. According to ChainCatcher, Lummis said on X that Democrats’ continued push for changes could leave future regulators able to "strangle the crypto industry."
Lummis said she believes the Clarity Act can pass if differences are bridged, but only if Democrats make further compromises rather than the White House. She previously said that if the bill dies, Democrats would be to blame.
The U.S. Senate is scheduled to hold a procedural vote on the bill next week. Lummis warned that if it does not pass next week, there will be no realistic chance for it during this decade.
The Clarity Act is intended to formally divide regulatory responsibilities and distinguish whether digital assets are securities, commodities, or stablecoins. It passed the House in July last year but was stalled amid conflict between banking lobby groups and crypto companies over customer stablecoin yield. A new draft circulated in July would bar government officials from promoting or profiting from crypto, drawing Democratic criticism over the Trump family’s involvement in the sector, while Democrats still said the bill remained insufficient and needed revisions.
