According to the BBC, Australia is set to propose draft legislation this week that would let users switch off social media algorithms, with Communications Minister Anika Wells saying tech firms such as Meta, Google and TikTok could face substantial penalties if they do not provide the option. Wells said the government is seeking expert advice on whether users should have to opt in or opt out of algorithm-driven feeds, and said the draft laws would also require platforms to stop harmful content, including illegal pornography and videos promoting disordered eating, from being shared.
