Vanda Insights: Asia's Fuel Import Dependence May Leave Economies Exposed to Geopolitical Turmoil

According to Vanda Insights founder Vandana Hari, Asia's dependence on fossil fuel imports may leave countries exposed to global energy supply volatility for decades. She said Asia is in a period of geopolitical turmoil and that this state will continue for decades, at least for years. About 90% of Asia's primary energy consumption still comes from oil, gas, and coal, and a New Energy Outlook report said Asian economies will benefit most from the energy transition. In Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, and India, energy import costs accounted for 3% to 6% of GDP in 2025.
