Meta has taken offline a Meta AI image-generation feature after it drew criticism and raised concerns about potential violations of likeness rights and possible criminal risks.
According to Jin10, Meta said earlier this week that users could generate images in Meta AI by mentioning public Instagram accounts they wanted to reference.
After the feature launched, it allowed references to public content by default. This prompted criticism from organizations including a U.S. actors union, which argued the feature could infringe on likeness rights and create crime-related risks.
Meta said the original intent was to provide a practical creative tool and to let users control whether their public content could be referenced in this way. However, Meta said it received user feedback that the feature did not meet expectations, and it has therefore removed the feature.
